January 11th, 2009

Hey everyone,I hope you all had a great weekend!1. The on-line schedule for Endocrinology is up. Anyone worried about the weekend of 2/13 should note that there is a small group on Friday 2/13 from 10 to 11. If you have a conflict you can contact Drs. Bianco or Acosta about it.2. We have our first Heme/Onc test this Friday morning.3. There are two path labs this week. The first is Monday 1/12 from 1 to 2. The second is Thursday 1/15 from 10 to 12. I don’t know if attendance will be taken or not so it’d be wise to show up just in case (not to mention it’s a valuable learning opportunity!)4. Please check your Faculty Skills schedule to see if you have skills session scheduled.5. Make sure you’ve filled out all of the on-line surveys on New Innovations.6. The EBM Preceptor Assignment is due on March 25. Please remember that you need to visit your Preceptor two times in order to complete the assignment properly. All of the materials are available on Blackboard. We need to do a total of 4 Preceptor visits this semester (in addition to any you need to make up for last semester).7. I was told that the Rheum exam grades will be posted on Monday.Let me know if you have any questions or if I missed something. Thanks!~Eyal

Respiratory Module Info

June 18th, 2008

Hi all!

I hope everyone is having a great summer! I’ve been in contact with Dr. Barret who is one of the coordinators for the respiratory module and she sent me some info to relay to you. If you weren’t planning on thinking about school at all for the summer, then just stop reading here and open this up again during orientation…

1. ASSIGNED TEXTBOOKS

Mandatory pulmonary texts:

Pulmonary Physiology

ISBN: 0-07-142869-0

Other texts: According to the core programs announced before (Anatomy, Histology, Embryology, Pathology and Radiology)

Recommended texts:
The following text is highly recommended as an introduction to interpreting chest X-rays, a task almost every physician will have to master in her/his professional career. A few copies are available for use in the reserve section of the library.

Felson’s Principles of Chest Roentgenology: A Programmed Text
2nd edition

2. ATTENDANCE POLICY
D. Attendance
Attendance is mandatory. Attendance will be checked at all small group conferences and the physiology laboratory. In addition, attendance will be spot checked in lectures (see below).

3. DATES FOR EXAMS, SMALL GROUPS
I can give you fairly certain dates for the exams and the basic science labs/small groups. Small group dates for the clinical section remain to be determined.

Course begins Mon. July 21.
A 3 hr laboratory will be given on Friday, July 25, with half the class coming in the morning, half in the afternoon.
Two Physiology small group problem-solving conferences will be held on Monday, July 28, occupying BOTH the morning and the afternoon.

The midterm exam is scheduled for Wednesday, July 30.
The final exam will be on Monday, August 18.
Midterm and final exams are weighted equally in determining final score.

4. Recommended preparation
Students should review their cardiovascular notes, since they will be expected to retain and apply this knowledge in the Respiratory Module.

Students could also begin reading the Respiratory texts. This is especially important for students whose quantitative and physics backgrounds are weak.

…As always, feel free to relay any questions or concerns to me.

One last email for those of you who have put it off until the end:

Here are the basic steps to apply for student loans.

1) File a completed FAFSA with the Department of Education (UMMSM Code E00533):  http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

2) Complete the Master Promissory Note:  https://login.salliemae.com/CALM/login.do?command=showLoginPage
–within this system you will be asked to specify a lender.  If your lender of choice is not listed contact the financial aid office. Again, the lenders that Dean Kasperski has told me the school has reviewed are: 5/3 Bank, Citi Bank, Access Group, Sallie Mae, EdAmerica. These suggestions are based on a list criteria the financial aid office setup.  You talk to Dean Kasperski about the details of that process.  Note that you are not limited to this list.

–You will be asked your loan period. The dates are: 7/18/2008-5/8/2009.
–You will be asked your grade level. Select “B.”

3) Complete and submit the Request for Federal Stafford Loan Funds form and return it to the Financial Aid Office: http://www.mededu.miami.edu/OSFA/files/Stafford_Request_Form.rtf

Some Video Updates

May 13th, 2008

Hi all,

1. Please by advised that the video for Dr. Myerberg’s lecture on arrythmias in ischemic heart disease is placed in the wrong lecture. You can find it in the schedule where the video for hemostasis should be. The video for Hemostasis is combined with the one for Platelet Function in the schedule where the platelet function video should be.

2. I have sent out the schedule to all those who will be reviewing their exams tomorrow, the 14th. Since time is limited, Dr. Lowery has requested that we not accept any more students to see their tests.

Thanks,
~Eyal

Curriculum update 5/12

May 12th, 2008

Hi all,

I hope everyone had a great, relaxing weekend…

1. Dr. Lowery wants to allow students the opportunity to review their bubble sheets and exams on Wednesday at lunch. If you feel there might be some discrepancy in the answers you put for the first exam and would like to review the sheet, please let me know so I can tell her how many people are going to come.

2. Check the doctoring syllabus to see when you have inpatient practice within the next two weeks (tomorrow, the 13th will be Courvoisier, Virchow, and Schweitzer). Clinical dress is required! Don’t forget your stethoscope!

3. Please remember the CAM assignment is due Wednesday, the 14th by 5 PM.

4. I am borrowing a copy of the 3rd edition Lilly in order to fully cross reference all the assigned readings and should have a full list done in the next few days.

5. There a few missing videos which I am still trying to track down.

6. The mid-module curriculum meeting will be this Wednesday. If you are interested in going and still haven’t told me, please do so. If you don’t want to go but have a comment/request feel free to e-mail me anytime.

7. Course evaluation sheets for the first half of cardio are available in the curriculum office.

8. I will be posting my e-mails on the class website for you to reference more quickly…
